A Message from Grant
I’m going to try to answer the most common questions concerning giving here but if I had to pick one message that captures what I think is God’s heart concerning giving – I’d pick this one. I preached this back in January of 2011 and it pretty much sums up why I give.

What happens to the money I give?
It provides the resources for the ministry of Western Hills. From our kid programs, youth, missionary support, building usage, and staff salaries – the money you use goes directly into the advancement of ministry through Western Hills. We have a high level of accountability and integrity between our Finance Team, Church Council, and congregation. Furthermore, no paid staff ever sees who gives what or how much. Our financial statements are available monthly in the front office as well as our budget.

What is a tithe and why should I give that?
A tithe is 10% of your income and in scriptures (Malachi 3:10-11) that is a baseline of generosity living. The truth is the Scriptures teach generous giving beyond that – to live in a way that has margin so that we can give even more away. But that money given is more about teaching us that 90% with God goes further than 100% without Him. It’s a way to keep us focused on the true provider of our resources – God.

What if I don’t have enough money to tithe?
Start somewhere and work quickly to increase that to 10%. I know that sounds scary if you’ve never given but scripture tells us to honor Him with our first 10% and our blessings will be overflowing in return. Not all of that blessing is financial but the challenge is from God to trust Him. Seek His guidance in how much you should give and he will honor your faithfulness and obedience.

Still not sure? Take the 3-Month Tithe Challenge. Register with the office that you want to do the 3-month tithe challenge. Give 10% of your income for 3 straight months. At the end of that time, if God hasn’t been faithful to His own word, we will refund 100% of your money that you’ve given. No questions asked. That’s how confident we are in God.

Should I tithe based on my pre-tax or after-tax income?
Do you want a pre-tax or post-tax blessing? The most common view is that gross earnings are the amount of God’s provision, and the tithe should be based on one-tenth of God’s provision. Taxes are generally considered payment for the privileges and services provided by the government. Scripture doesn’t use the terms “net” or “gross” so to get legalistic on this is pointless. I’d just remind you that it is important to God the spirit in which we give. He tells us in 2 Corinthians 9 that “each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give; not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” The bottom line – ask God, do what He says.

Why do you accept credit cards?
We wrestled with this for a long time but finally came to this conclusion: When used correctly, debit and credit cards can be an efficient tool for payments and purchases. Many people utilize them in place of checks or cash throughout the month, then pay off the balance in full. This is how they should be used and for these people, we offer the option of using a credit or debit card to tithe. We strongly discourage those who have ongoing credit card debt from exercising this option.

What is the deadline for annual contributions?
Cash contributions must be received or postmarked by December 31 to be included on your giving statement for that year. Online transactions must be initiated by December 31.

I have a question that you didn’t answer.
