How to Receive God’s Guidance

I will climb my watchtower and wait to see what the Lord will tell me to say and what answer He will give to my complaint. The Lord gave me this answer: ‘Write down clearly on tablets what I reveal to you, so that it can be read at a glance. Habakkuk 2:1-2 (TEV)

Requesting Guidance

1. Ask God for answers.
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.
James 1:5a

2. Expect God to answer!
...He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. James 1:5b-6

Receiving Guidance (Habakkuk 2:1-2)

1. Withdraw: Get alone in a quiet place

“I will climb my watchtower...” Habakkuk 2:1
“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5:16 (NIV)

2. Wait: Calm your thoughts and emotions

“. . . and wait to see what the Lord will tell. . .” Habakkuk 2:1
“Be still, and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
“LORD... Every morning, I tell you what I need, and wait for your answer.” Psalm. 5:3

3. Weigh (responses): Let God speak to you
“I will look to see what He will say to me.” Habakkuk 2:1 (NIV)

How can I be sure I’m hearing God’s voice?
    a) Does it agree with the Bible?
    b) Does wise council confirm it?
    c) Does it make me more Christ-like?

4. Worship: Thank God for speaking to you
“I have heard all about you, LORD. I am filled with awe by your amazing works.. . ” Habakkuk 3:2
